NW Works in Profile: Connor Darr

Connor Darr

Meet Connor! Connor is a Winchester native who learned about NW Works thanks to his mom and her knowledge of NW Works’ presence in the community. After Connor learned more about NW Works, he opted to join since he had heard nothing but good things about the organization. As a coach and general supporter of Special Olympics, Connor is no stranger to supporting individuals with disabilities and helping them grow in their skills and confidence. In the Summer of 2023 Connor went to Germany to assist with Special Olympics, and he has remained interested in the program since then. As a Direct Support Professional and an as needed Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist, or job coach, Connor has used his time with Special Olympics to connect with many of the people receiving services from NW Works.

In his role as a DSP/VRS, Connor sees himself building confidence in the individuals that he supports and helping them to be more independent. Connor enjoys seeing all individuals grow and progress whether in the Group Day Support Program or out in the community. Connor referenced his time as a VRS in the community where he will assist an individual struggling with a skill and they’ll struggle at first, but the next day it’s a complete difference in how the individual has learned the skill and is now feeling confident because of their progress.

Working at NW Works is rewarding for Connor and comes in more ways than just providing meaningful services, but also through the smiles he is greeted with daily. As Connor stated, “Being greeted by a smile from a minimum of five people is a day-changer. No matter what’s going on in my personal life or in my day so far, I know that by coming to NW Works I’ll be greeted by smiling faces.” In addition to the good feelings that NW Works provides for Connor, he shared that progression of skills and confidence building was a key reason behind his love for his role.

In Connor’s free time he enjoys working out, spending time with his family, cooking, and listening to music. Connor is also pursuing his associate’s degree at Laurel Ridge Community College as a part time student and is set to graduate in the fall.

If you, like Connor, are looking for employment where you can make a difference and support individuals as they progress on their goals, NW Works is the place for you! Visit our “Careers” page and join our growing team!
