Mission Moment: A Decade of Growth, Courage, and Increased Independence

Team member, Robin, has been receiving services at NW Works for 10 years. She’s been through a plethora of changes as our organization has evolved, but through the changes Robin’s desire for growth and an increased sense of independence have remained the same. At NW Works, we believe in supporting individuals as they grow, build skills, and develop their independence. Over the last 55 years, our mission has evolved to focus not only on providing access to employment, but on helping individuals maximize their independence and develop the skills that allow them to thrive in the community. We are proud to highlight Robin, whose journey reflects the power of steady growth, perseverance, and meaningful support.

Over the years, Robin has held a variety of roles ranging from production work to enclave positions including work onsite with the Hood Line, along with off-site work at Trex and Thermo Fisher. Each role built up Robin’s skills and helped her understand what environments best support her success. With the guidance of her job coach, Caitlin, Robin learned how to communicate effectively, set healthy boundaries, and focus on quality in her work.

As Robin continued to grow, she transitioned into her current role at Martin’s, where she has become a valued and dependable team member. Her responsibilities have expanded as she has demonstrated reliability, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. Through natural supports and ongoing communication with her employer, Robin has shaped her role into one that aligns with her strengths while still meeting workplace expectations.

One of Robin’s most significant areas of growth has been her increasing independence. She now works the majority of her shifts without her job coach present, makes her own phone calls, and navigates workplace interactions with confidence. Outside of work, she has reached major personal milestones including moving into her own apartment, learning to cook from scratch, and building routines that support a healthy, active lifestyle.

Robin’s journey shows how consistent support, skill‑building, and the courage to step outside one’s comfort zone can lead to meaningful independence. Her progress is a reminder that growth happens over time, and that with courage and support, change is possible.

In Robin’s own words: “It’s never too late to learn new skills. Have the courage to try new things — out here, you never know what you can do.”
